DeWitt Winney, Company K, 7th Cavalry, Died at Little Big Horn

DeWitt Winney was one of two Saratoga County men to die on June 6, 1876 in the Little Big Horn battles.  The other was James Butler.  Both were First Sergeants:  Winney of Company K, and Butler of Company L.  Both are memorialized on the Saratoga County  Veterans’ Monument at the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.

A few years after his discharge from his Civil War service, Winney re-enlisted in the Regular Army.  He ended up in the same organization as Butler and, as First Sergeants and fellow New Yorkers, they probably were well acquainted.

Winney’s company was involved in the “hill fight” as opposed to being in the battle under Custer that became legend as his “Last Stand.”  Until now, photographs of any participants, much less of those killed in the battles, have been difficult to find.  I have sent a copy of this scan to the Friends of the Battlefield to be used for research in their and the National Park Service’s purposes.
