Civil War Discharges in Saratoga County Clerk's Miscellaneous Records

The Saratoga County Clerk has, since just after the Civil War, recorded on request any individual resident's discharge from active military service. The following Civil War servicemen's discharges are recorded in the books of "Miscellaneous Records" in the Saratoga County Clerk's record room. Although some are more complete (and some possibly more accurate) than others, as a body of records these recorded documents are quite revealing about the individual soldiers.
The discharge usually included:
The table row contains also the book and page number of Saratoga County Miscellaneous Records at which the discharge is recorded. Rarely were any other details included. Some discharges recorded the date and amounts paid to the servicemember as mustering-out or other final payments. Some recorded only that such payment was made on a given date. All these discharges followed a standard format, written out by an Army clerk who filled in the applicable details.
As with any such records, details should be verified with as many other sources as possible. Even in the recorded discharges spelling was inconsistent, errors and omissions were made, and existing records vary widely in legibility.
