Info from C. Durkee's 1878 cemetery report. A cabinet maker by trade he organized the South Greenfield Congregational Church in 1790. He became the first pastor serving until his death in 1814. His starting salary was 70 pounds per year. The first church was built in 1793 on the south side of the road. In 1831 a house on a 13 acre plot was purchased across the road from Vincent Youmans for $500.00. Then the church was moved across the road onto the larger plot and remodeled at a cost of $597.50. In 1855 and 1860 additional repairs were made. The church was in a flourishing condition for many years. Later the church ceased to exist possibly around 1920. See copy of epitaph on stone. |
