Per C. Durkee's report in 1878, "The foregoing are all the inscriptions to be found in the cemetery, which is located on the north side of the highway leading from Greenfield Center to St. John's Corners, and about one quarter mile from Greenfield Center. Copied Oct. 10, 1876."

He died of Diptheria at Alexandria Virginia Feb. 7 1863.

The 1865 Town Civil War records state he was born in Dutchess County NY son of John and Rachel O'Brien (widow Crannel) Bentley. He was a cooper who lived in Greenfield. He enlisted Sept. 6 1862 as a private Co. H 153 NY Infantry for 3 years at Greenfield. Mustered in October 17 1862 with a $100 bounty paid by the town. Discharged Oct. 17 1865 by reason of expiration of term of service. Post-war address Greenfield Center.

E 77th Infantry for 3 years. Deserted at Warrenton Va. on November 6 1863. The 1890 Special US Census states he died at Andersonville Prison after 17 months there. His widow was still alive in 1890.

Opened a mercantile establishment at St. John's Corners in 1793-94 also a tavern. Chairman Saratoga County board of Supervisors 1801. In 1802 opened a distillery and tannery at Porter Corners. County Sheriff in 1807 and 1810. In 1813 School Commissioner laid out 16 school districts. He at one time owned the home owned in 1975 by Mr. and Mrs. Merton Atwell. As owner he added a wing to the house and remodeled the home. He was keeper of the Porter Corners store until his death in 1821.

St. John who settled St. John's Corners Greenfield at the junction of the Wilton Road and Locust Grove Road in 1786. From Conn. Came with Ebenezer and Giles Fitch and a Mr. Smith. He was elected Greenfield Town Supervisor on April 7 1795 (and re-elected 1802-03). At the same meeting given recognition for Tavern Keeping. His original home was later operated as "The Wayside Inn" as a stage stop and was a rendezvous for British soldiers about 1812. The smaller house on the north-west corner was the winery for the tavern.
