Mar.16, Lewis Ellsworth who was born in Ballston Center in 1829 and had resided in Saratoga for 62 years died. His daughter married Charles E. Black who died recently and his son Lewis W. Ellsworth also resides here.
May 1, A conference was held here of the Y. M. C. A. officers of the state.
May 6, The trolley company begins grading for trolley tracks across Broadway.
May 7, It was reported that the attendance at night school had been 60.
May 1, William Elmer Brown well-known resident died. Mr. and Mrs. Brown came to Saratoga Springs in 1874 and in 1875 Mr. Brown formed a co-partnership with Cassius B. Thomas in the coal and wood business and continued in busines under the firm name of Thomas and Brown for 25 years.
May 21, The 73rd annual meeting of the Congregational Association of New York State met at the Congregational Church this city.
May 20, Ranulf Compton and Florence Jane Mabee were married.
May 31, Dr. Arthur L. Churchill was elected grand ruler of the New Grand Ruling Jurisdiction No. 4 at a meeting at Rochester.
June 4, Alfred H. Cluett Memorial room was designated at the Hawley Home for Children in recognition of his benefactions to the Home.
June 10, John J. Deacy and Madeline M. Koenig of this city were married.
In early June occurred the death of Captain A. P. Mitchell who for many years conducted a grocery store here. He enlisted in Co. K 88th New York Volunteers and was breveted as captain.
June 13, John McDowell died. He was a relative of Benjamin F. Judson, one of the founders of The Saratogian and as a boy learned to set type and was employed in The Saratogian office. In 1868 he went west and was employed in western newspaper offices among them the Chicago Tribune. In 1870 he returned to Saratoga and was made city editor of The Saratogian. Later with Captain Judson he started the Saratoga Daily Union and was its editor.
June 17, Spencer Trask contributed $3000 to local Y. M. C. A. work.
June 18, William H. Bennett was made a member of the committee in charge of handling $35000 appropriated by the state for National Encampment of the G. A. R. here.
June 24, The 37th annual meeting of the state convention of the County Superintendents of the Poor was held here.
July 6, The 30th triennial Conclave of the Templar Orders of the United States was held here bringing 50,000 visitors. Many distinguished visitors were here from Canada and England.
Sept. 9-14, The National Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic met here. The grand parade of Wednesday the 11th took place in a heavy downpour of rain.
Sept. 20, Miss Ellen Hardin Walworth published a new book "Life Sketches of Father Walworth."
Sept. 20, The Saratoga Hospital Training School organized an alumnae association.
Oct. 8, The New York State Association of Postmasters was formed here.
Nov. 4, John L. Henning died. He studied law with Judge John C. Hulbert and in 1878 entered into partnership with Judge Hulbert the firm name of Hulbert and Henning continuing until 1883. He was one of the most prominent members of the Saratoga county bar. Mrs. Edward D. Eddy of this city is a daughter.
Nov.12, Mr. and Mrs. Zachariah Curtis Shonts observed their 50th wedding anniversary at the home of Mrs. Frank A. Cook.
Dec. 2, The Rev. Dr. Joseph Carey celebrated his 35th anniversary as rector of Bethesda Episcopal Church.
Dec. 8, J. Augustus Smith died. He was one of the prominent business men of the community. Miss Margaret E. Smith and Mrs. Federico Pohndorff are his daughters.
Dec. 21, The Saratoga County Board of supervisors decide to buy the Saratoga Lake bridge.
1400 were killed by an earthquake in Jamaica in this year.
